TensorCharts Volume Profile: Session vs Visible-Range Context

A session profile and a visible-range profile can put the point of control in different places on the same chart. Choose the range for the question, not by default.

Short answer

A session profile measures volume at price within a fixed time session, so it is stable and comparable day to day; a visible-range profile measures whatever is on screen, so it changes as you scroll or zoom. On 24/7 crypto markets, session boundaries are clock times you should know. Use session profiles for recurring structure and comparisons, visible range for quick context, and an event-anchored range for a specific move.

Illustrative POC shift

Illustrative: on one BTC perpetual chart the session POC sits at 61,200, while a visible range covering three days places the POC at 60,400 because an earlier high-volume day dominates. Neither is wrong; they summarise different periods.

Event-anchored ranges

For most trading decisions, the most informative profile is neither session nor visible range but a fixed range anchored to an event: the start of a breakout, a news release or the low of a capitulation. It shows where the market accepted value since that event, which is the question behind most entries.

Anchor the start to the event's first bar and extend the range to the present. As new bars arrive, the POC may migrate; that migration is itself information about whether acceptance is following price.

Record the anchor time in UTC. Two traders using the same event but different anchors will see different POCs, and the anchor is the first thing to check when levels disagree.

You are using a visible-range profile, which recalculates for what is on screen.

When does a crypto session start?

At the clock time your tool uses; check it, often UTC midnight.

Which profile is best?

The one whose range matches your question.
