Volume Profile on Low-Liquidity Crypto: When POC Becomes Unstable
On thin crypto markets, a few trades can move the point of control from one end of the range to the other.
Short answer
On low-liquidity crypto markets the volume profile's POC (highest-volume price) can jump when a handful of large trades land at a different price, or when row size changes. Before using POC as a level, check total volume in the range, how much higher the POC row is than the next rows (a clear peak vs a flat profile), and whether the POC is stable as you extend the range. A flat, unstable profile has no meaningful POC.
Why POC jumps
Illustrative: a range has rows of 40, 38, 37 and 36 units. One 10-unit trade at the fourth row makes it the new POC. On liquid markets, rows differ by thousands of units and single trades don't matter.

| Test | Stable POC | Unstable POC |
|---|---|---|
| POC row ÷ next row | > 1.3 | < 1.1 |
| Change row size ±1 step | Same area | Jumps |
| Extend range 10% | Same area | Jumps |
| Total volume | Large | Small |
Alternatives
On thin markets, use the value area (70% default) rather than a single POC, wider rows, or longer ranges. Or skip profiles and use simpler structure. See TradingView Volume Profile for Crypto: Select the Range and Volume Units and TensorCharts Volume Profile: Session vs Visible-Range Context.
Example: widening rows
Illustrative: on a small token, a 1-day profile with 100 rows shows three candidate POCs within 4% of each other, each only slightly higher than its neighbours. Reducing to 30 rows merges them into one clear peak with a value area spanning 6% of price. The coarser profile is less precise but far more stable, which is what matters for using it as context.
Conclusion
Test POC stability before using it on thin markets; prefer value areas or wider rows when it jumps.

Launch ChartsPodQuestions readers ask
Why does POC change so much on altcoins?
Low volume makes rows similar, so single trades shift the peak.
How do I make it stable?
Wider rows, longer ranges, or use the value area.
Is POC useful on thin markets?
Only if it passes stability tests.
