DEX Pool Liquidity: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
Right before a swap, the liquidity number that matters is not the headline. It's the depth your trade will move through.
Short answer
Before a swap, read pool liquidity in four steps: confirm the pool (pair address, quote token) your route will use; read the quote-token reserve or, for concentrated pools, in-range depth near the current price; estimate impact for your size (about 2 × trade ÷ quote reserve for small trades in constant-product pools); and compare with the router's quoted price and minimum received. If the quote implies more impact than you calculated, the route may use thinner pools or liquidity may have changed.
Four steps
| Trade | Quote reserve | Est. impact |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $250,000 | ≈ 0.8% |
| $5,000 | $250,000 | ≈ 4% |
| $5,000 | $50,000 | ≈ 20% |

Try it in ChartsPodWhy not the headline
The headline USD liquidity counts both sides at current prices and, for concentrated pools, includes out-of-range liquidity. The quote side and in-range depth are what your trade actually moves through. See DEX Screener Liquidity in USD: Token Prices Can Change the Number and Concentrated Liquidity Outside the Current Price: Why TVL Can Mislead.
Example: route surprise
Illustrative: a trader estimates 0.8% impact from the main pool's $250,000 quote reserve for a $1,000 swap. The router quote implies 3%. The route preview shows 60% routed through a $30,000 pool because the main pool's fee tier is higher. Changing the slippage tolerance would not fix this; choosing the route or splitting the trade would.

Which liquidity number should I use?
Quote reserve or in-range depth of the pool your route uses.
How do I estimate impact?
About 2 × trade size ÷ quote reserve for small trades in constant-product pools.
What if the router quote is worse?
Check the route and current liquidity; split or skip.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
- DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
